Viral protein part of a genetic system that takes part in the decision of the outcome of the infection: latency or replication. Expression of genetic switch proteins control the expression of viral genes that act as effectors in either the establishment of latency (lysogeny) or in promoting productive replication (lytic cycle). Interactions between proteins involved in switch regulatory processes and host proteins often influence the decision.
