Definition

Protein involved in the induction of whooping cough, a respiratory infection caused by the very small Gram-negative aerobic coccobacillus Bordetella pertussis. It is characterized by paroxysmal coughing often ending in a characteristic inspiratory gasp (whoop). The bacterium is a pathogen for humans and possibly for higher primates.
