Definition

Protein involved in tissue remodeling. As an example the matrix-degrading plasminogen activators (PAs) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are general proteolytic enzyme systems which mediate tissue remodeling and tissue destruction in a variety of physiological and pathological conditions, including ovulation, angiogenesis, implantation, tumor invasion and inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
