Definition

Protein which activates prothrombin, the inactive precursor of thrombin. For example, staphylocoagulase, an extracellular protein produced by Staphylococcus aureus, forms a complex with prothrombin which can clot fibrinogen without any proteolytic cleavage of prothrombin.
