Protein which, if defective, causes gout, a recurrent acute arthritis of peripheral joints caused by the precipitation of monosodium urate crystals in articular cartilage. Gout is usually due to overproduction of uric acid secondary to an inherited abnormality of purine metabolism, but may be a result of urate under-excretion.
